The State of Hawaii, U.S., will enforce the new law which completely prohibits smoking at a public space on November 16. It aims to protect a nonsmoker's health from the damage of passive smoking.
Smoking area will be set within six meters from the public places and their entrances specified by the state or counties. Smoking in a restaurant, a bar, a sport institution, etc. becomes illegal and individual offender will be imposed a fine, a maximum of 50 dollars (about 6000 yen). The same law has been already enforced in 13 states in the US, such as California and New York. In my town, smoking is prohibited on the road within a few hundred meters from the station. Smoking not only harms a nonsmoker's health but also sometimes injures children. Smoking while walking is very dangerous. If fire of cigarette touched an eye of a small child, it leads to blindness. However, it is a very deplorable situation that some imprudent smokers carelessly break the law. ¡¡ |
