I liked Kyoto for sightseeing. But recently as I get old, I come to hate crowded places. During New Year's holidays and tourist seasons, popular shrines and temples are very crowded. The main streets like Shijo-Kawaramachi are also crowded. Kyoto is one of the largest cities in Japan, but I felt Kyoto is only different city from other big cities. Kyoto is very nice for sightseeing, but would be hard to live for me. There are many people in each small place. No spacious shopping centers nor big amusement places in downtown. All popular areas are stuffy. The reason is that the government keeps reconstructing a building under control. In other words, constructing a tall building is banned under landscape management. It seems that all the surrounding mountains can be seen from Old Imperial Palace. I like quiet Kyoto in the off-seasons.
